TRIED & TASTED: BYOBaby Wine Tasting

THE PLACE:

Streatham Wine House, 53A Streatham Hill, SW2 4TS

THE GIST:

Think you know what BYOB means? Think again. When we heard that an intimate little wine house in Streatham was doing sell-out midweek Bring-Your-Own-BABY wine tastings, we were over there for the ‘Exploring Italy’ session faster than you can say “prosecco”.

THE HIGHLIGHTS:

Other than the fact you’re getting to legitimately spend an afternoon drinking top quality wine in the middle of the day with other like-minded mamas, there’s plenty of other reasons these events are a corker of an idea…

The tastings are lead by New Zealand mama Cherie Agnew, who is herself there with adorable nine-month-old son Nat strapped firmly to her front (pictured below) and therefore knows what we’re all up against when it comes to simultaneous juggling of a baby, social chat and a wine glass (or six).

Cherie expertly judges the mood of the room (and its babies) and adjusts the way she takes the tasting accordingly. Noise levels can quickly escalate so she often moves around, speaking with small groups about each wine rather than fighting the noise in trying to address the room as a whole. This works really well and means you are getting the added bonus of one-on-one chat with an expert for each of the six wines you try.

Streatham Wine House also lays on tasty treats for that all-important soakage - ours was delicious antipasti for that true Italian experience and Cherie suggested which of the meats, cheeses and olives worked best with whatever grape variety we were sampling.

THE NIGGLES:

The wine tastings are held in a private room downstairs which means that you have to enlist the help of superhero events manager Tim for carrying your buggy down when you arrive, and back up when you leave. He’s so good about it, but seeing him do this 20 times each way is exhausting just to watch!

The events tend to be sell-outs with around 20 mums, dads and babies in attendance, so once all the buggies, people and baby accoutrements are in situ it can start to get a little tricky to access your pram. However, the buzzy atmosphere worked like a charm on Theo for naptime and he slept in his buggy for two hours. Genuinely unheard of!

THE DAMAGE:

For a two-hour tasting of six great quality wines with accompanying nibbles, expert insight from Cherie, and the chance to meet plenty of other mamas, we’re struggling to think of a better way to spend £20.

The wines you taste are also available to buy in the Wine House at very reasonable prices, so you can take your favourite home and wow your other half with all your newfound knowledge.

TOP TIPS:

As mentioned above, tickets for these events tend to sell-out so when they go on sale make sure you snap ‘em up fast.

Don’t worry if you don’t have anyone to go with, the way the event is set up around a big table means that there are plenty of people to chat to – you already have babies and a love of wine in common, what more do you need?

The downstairs room used for the wine tastings is also available to hire. Our wine expert Cherie already has it booked for Nat’s first birthday party which we thought was a fab idea!

THE VERDICT: 9/10

If there’s anything not to love about BYOBaby Wine Tasting we’re yet to hear it. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun with plenty of chat and ZERO judgement for having a baby on a boob and a glass in your hand. We just wish we’d discovered this earlier in our Mat Leave so we could have made it a monthly (ok, fortnightly) date!

The BYOBaby Wine Tastings are held 1pm-3pm twice a month at Streatham Wine House. For more information and to buy tickets to the next event, visit the website.
